As the new election comes closer, there is much debate on the new customs that will be implemented on the United States. Joe Biden, former Vice President of Barack Obama, is now a candidate for office. Recently, Biden stated that if he were to be elected, he would revoke section 230 and hold popular websites, like Facebook, liable for their projected content. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act highlights that website providers will not be held responsible for the information provided on the website. This spawned from Facebook displaying supposedly 'false' ad campaigns for Trump against Biden. Biden was furious that Facebook had promoted this. In other words, Biden has stated that he is willing to rewrite the rules of the section in order for all websites to be "more socially conscious". Section 230 of Communications Decency Act is basically the first amendment right for the internet.

As pleasant as it would possibly be to filter the content on the internets most infamous websites, freedom of speech is very crucial and foundational for media websites. The reason why the internet is such a popular outlet is because people can put up a front and be anonymous. Obviously there are ways to prevent specific negative behavior; other popular apps like Tik Tok, a new video platform similar to Vine, which was it's superior until the apps demise in 2016, filters out negative language and behavior on it's own, without representatives from the site looking it over. In conclusion, revoking Section 230 of the Decency Act would be detrimental to social media.
