The History of Instagram

To some, it feels as though Instagram has been apart of our lives forever. Surprisingly, the infamous application is just a little older than 10. Beginning originally as a travel application, Stanford University Student Kevin Systrom, whom had previously worked at Google, took his coding skills to another level. He wanted to explore past the boundaries of travel applications, and focus on one thing: sharing mobile photos. https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/102615/story-instagram-rise-1-photo0sharing-app.asp

With the help of colleague, Mike Kreiger, the two managed to raise over 500,000 dollars in funds to support a new photo app. Unlike other photo applications in the early 2000's, Systrom wanted to add something that they didn't have: adding filters to photos. However, the early development of the application lacked strongly in social capabilities. Comments, likes, and photo sharing were Instagram's only possibilities.

When the app released in 2010, it had accumulated over 25,000 downloads. And this had happened in only a matter of hours, and soon became the #1 photography app available in the iTunes store.

Since it's release, the application has undergone a numerous amount of changes. Advertisements, live streaming, podcasts, direct messages, stories, videos, and much more are available on Instagram today. In a way of it's own, it mimics Facebook, but allows for a more photo-centered approach.
