Com Tech Timeline: The Beginning of Online Videos

Youtube has proven to be one of the most successful internet softwares of the 21st century. Beginning in early 2004, founders Jawed Karim, Steve Chen, and Chad Hurley wanted to originally create a dating-like website. This website was ultimately similar to Facebook, and when Facebook reigned supreme, the founders took a different angle.
While trying to find a video of Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, founder Jawed Karim realized...theres no place to find it! And thus, the invention Youtube was born. Their goal was to create a video platform where people could upload their own videos for others to see.

Karim's first video, titled "Me at the zoo", is exactly what it says it is. Karim is at the zoo, standing in front of an enclosure, and commenting on how long their tusks are. The video has accumulated almost 100 million views since its release.

A short 2 years later, what was once an independent capital fund start-up company was now purchased by Google for 1.65 billion dollars. Slowly, the website began traveling to other countries, first hitting the UK and Europe.

While searching key events that happened while Youtube climbed to the top, I found an interesting timeline. https://www.officetimeline.com/blog/youtube-history-timeline
The timeline highlights just how drastic the changes were for Youtube. Over the years, views increased by over 10x every year. Live streaming became a popular add-on, and then was picked up by many competing sites, like Instagram. New innovations began to pour in. The company now offers Youtube RED, which is a premium service that allows the removal of advertisements, to stream music videos, and special exclusive Youtube series that cannot be offered on the regular site.

The expansion has only continued to grow. There are several different events that have now spawned from the expansion. Playlist Live, VidCon, and other conventions are a result of popular youtube stars. Thousands upon thousands of Youtube Subscribers come to see their favorite vloggers talk on a panel on stage. Some of the most popular Youtube stars, like PewDiePie(whom is a very famous gamer, people literally just watch him play video games), have over 100 million subscribers.
